Steps

  1. Step 1

    Keep fruits and vegetable separate

Keep fruits and vegetables separate. Different gases are produced by fruits and vegetables, which cause others to deteriorate.

  2. Step 2

    Store leftovers

Store leftovers in airtight, leakproof containers.

  3. Make sure any containers you purchase or use have a tight seal, and throw away old storage containers that have cracked lids.

  4. Step 3

    Put cooked foods

Put cooked food and leftovers above raw meat, seafood, and poultry.

  5. Step 4

    Keep meat in bottom drawer

Keep all meat in the bottom drawer. This prevents cross-contamination through any drippings.

  6. Place meat in a sealed plastic bag to prevent leaking juices.

  7. Step 5

    Close jars and bottles

Make sure jars and bottles are closed tightly to prevent spoiling or passing of odors to other food.

  8. Step 6

    Store condiments and drinks

Put items that will not spoil, such as condiments and bottled drinks, in the door compartment.

  9. Step 7

    Organize

Avoid overfilling the shelves, which can prevent the circulation of cold air. Stay organized so your foods remain safe and fresh.

  10. Approximately 5,000 deaths and 325,000 hospitalizations are caused by food-borne diseases each year.
