Ferrets have personalities halfway between those of cats and dogs. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when you set out to buy one.

Step 1: Check legality
Find out whether ferrets are legal in your area, and whether you will need a license to keep one.
Step 2: Check vaccinations
Make sure the ferret you are interested in has had all the necessary vaccinations, including rabies and distemper.
Never purchase a ferret that has not been fixed and de-scented.
Step 3: Check the physical condition
Examine the ferret, checking for bright eyes, a soft coat, and healthy skin and whiskers.
Step 4: Evaluate the personality
Play with the ferret before you take it home, and get to know its personality.
Step 5: Check the history; prepare home
Ask the owner whether the ferret bites excessively or whether there are other issues you should know about. If the ferret passes your criteria, make sure you’ve prepared your home for the arrival — and enjoy a new phase in your life.
