Steps

  1. Step 1

    Measure the width

Measure the width of the window on the outside of the frame. If a rod is present, measure the width of the rod from end to end instead.

  2. If you have a curtain rod with finials or end caps, measure the width of the rod between the end treatments.

  3. Step 2

    Write down measurement

Write down which window you measured and the width measurement.

  4. Keep track of each window being measured because most windows in your home will be different sizes, even when they appear to be the same size.

  5. Step 3

    Measure the length

Measure the length that you would like your curtain panels to be, starting at the top of the window frame or rod and ending at the point where you would like your curtains to stop.

  6. Step 4

    Measure for floor to ceiling

Measure from the ceiling to 1 inch above the floor for floor-to-ceiling drapes.

  7. Step 5

    Measure for floor length

Measure length beginning 4 inches above the window frame to 1 inch above the floor for floor-length curtains.

  8. Step 6

    Write down measurements

Write down the desired lengths for each window and use these to purchase drapes or curtains that fit your needs and style. Enjoy your window coverings.

  9. In many Japanese homes it is common to use noren or fabric panels, as room dividers, wall hangings, or window and door coverings. Historically, they were used by store keepers to indicate their store name.
