Make your store-bought gravy taste homemade by adding a few ingredients you probably already have in your cabinet.
You will need
- Scrapings from the pan
- Onions or shallots
- White wine
- or low fat milk
- Roasted garlic
- Meat (optional)
Step 1 Add dripping Liven up store-bought gravy by adding the scrapings from the bottom of the roasting pan and a little bit of the drippings.
You can also add bits of the meat you’re pouring the gravy on.
Step 2 Add onions or shallots Spice up the flavor by sauteing caramelized onions or shallots in butter. Add 1/4 cup of onion for each cup of gravy.
Step 3 Add spice to gravy Add spice to the gravy by finely chopping dried ancho, habanero, or chipotle peppers and stirring them in.
Step 4 Make a savory gravy Make a savory gravy by adding sauteed onions, mushrooms, rosemary, and white wine.
Step 5 Add liquor Enhance the flavor by adding a shot your favorite spirit. Brandy, port wine, cognac, and sherry are all great choices. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons for each cup of gravy.
Step 6 Make creamy gravy Make creamy gravy by adding cream, half-and-half or low fat milk to the gravy.
Step 7 Add roasted garlic Jazz up the gravy by whisking in 2 to 3 tablespoons of roasted garlic for each cup of gravy. Don’t forget to pass out the breathe mints. Enjoy!
