You Will Need

  • Sunlight
  • Well-draining soil
  • Water
  • Fertilizer
  • Palm tree specialist
  • Container (optional)
  • Vermiculite (optional)
  • Peat moss (optional)
  • Potting soil (optional)

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Plant the tree

Plant the dwarf palm where it will get full sunlight in soil that drains well.

  2. If you plant the tree in a container, use a soil mixture of one part vermiculite, one part peat moss, and one part potting soil. Make sure the container allows water to escape freely.

  3. Step 2

    Keep the soil moist

Keep the soil around the tree evenly moist. Water the tree daily for the first two weeks after planting by letting a hose run slowly at its base. Later, reduce watering to two or three times a week. Water in the morning or evening, not at mid-day.

  4. Step 3

    Fertilize

Fertilize the tree two or three months after planting. Use a time-release fertilizer and follow the instructions on the package for frequency of application.

  5. Step 4

    Consult a palm tree specialist

Consult a palm tree specialist when the tree needs to be pruned. The tree's foliage protects the tree from extreme weather and high winds, so over-pruning can harm the tree.

  6. While vacationing in Fiji in 2006, Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards suffered a concussion after falling out of a palm tree.
