Whether traveling alone with your baby or with the whole family, travel like a pro and create happy memories on the road.
Make a checklist a week or two before you leave. Go through your normal routine and jot down what items you need and what items can stay behind.
Plan for every contingency by packing all necessary medicines for colic, colds, rashes, bug bites, and sunburns.
If you’re traveling by car, deck it out with a side window shade to keep the sun off the baby as your drive. Keep toys within reach for entertainment and a bucket nearby for carsickness.
Keep a bag of toys nearby if you’re on a plane in case the little one gets fussy.
Unpack as soon as you arrive to put everything you need within arm’s reach and make the hotel, cottage, or rental feel homier.
Stick to your normal routine as much as possible to prevent fussiness and avoid interrupting the baby’s natural sleeping and eating cycles.
Set up a changing station with diapers, wipes, a changing pad, and other essentials in one area. Create a makeshift kitchen area with bottles, water, milk, and snacks handy.
If you can, plan a shopping trip the first day you arrive if your vacation is longer than 4 or 5 days. This cuts down on the amount you have to pack.
Enjoy being together. Relax and don’t worry about seeing the sights, but do take lots of pictures of your brand new baby.
Newborn babies tend to sleep between 14 and 16 hours each day, but that sleep can be in 2- to 4-hour chunks throughout the night and day.
