You Will Need

  • Nuts
  • Pretzels
  • 1/4 c. cranberries
  • 1/4 c. chocolate-covered coffee beans
  • Candy
  • Cereal
  • 2 c. goldfish crackers
  • Dried fruits
  • 1 1/2 c. miniature marshmallows
  • 1/2 c. coconut
  • Seasonings
  • 1/2 c. vegetable oil
  • Jerky (optional)

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Make a mixed-nut trail mix

    Make a mixed-nut trail mix by combining 1 cup of cashews, 1 cup of peanuts, 1 cup of almonds, 1/4 cup of shelled pistachios, 1/4 cups of pretzels, 1/4 cup of dried cranberries, 1/4 cup of chocolate-covered coffee beans, and 1/4 cup Reese's Pieces in a large bowl. Put 1 cup of trail mix in individual resealable snack bags for each hiker.

  2. Store the mix in a cool dry place so the chocolate does not melt.

  3. Step 2

    Make an energy trail mix

    Make gorp by combining 4 cups of cereal, 2 cups of peanut M & M 's, 2 cups of small crackers or pretzels, 1 cup Brazil nuts, 1 cup of dried apricots, 1 cup dried cherries, and 1 cup of raisins in a large bowl.

  4. Step 3

    Make a marshmallow trail mix

    Make a marshmallow trail mix by mixing 1 1/2 cups of marshmallows, 1 cup of dried apricots, 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1 cup of cashews, 1/2 cup of raisins, 1/4 cup of sunflowers seeds, and 1/2 cup of shredded coconut.

  5. Add more protein by adding chopped up beef, turkey, or salmon jerky.

  6. Step 4

    Make a toasted almond mix

    Make a toasted almond trail mix by combining 1 cup of toasted almonds, 1 cup pitted dates, 1 cup dried banana chips, 1 cup of dried apricots, 1/2 cup of sunflower seeds, and 1 cup of raisins.

  7. Step 5

    Make a spicy trail mix

    Make a spicy trail mix by combining 1/2 tablespoon of cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon of chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 6 teaspoons of ranch dressing mix, 4 cups of bite size pretzels, 1 1/2 cups of crisp cereal squares, and 1 1/2 mixed nuts in a large brown paper bag. Add the oil and shake. Place the trail mix on a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour at 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Enjoy these high-protein snacks on the go.
