You Will Need

  • Difficult task
  • Uncompromising attitude
  • Liquor
  • Courage

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Take on a dirty job

Take on a difficult task on someone else's behalf -- a dirty job is the perfect opportunity to get true grit. And remember: worry about the job at hand, not other people's feelings.

  2. Try to make some money from the job -- getting true grit doesn't mean abandoning self-interest.

  3. Step 2

    Dive in

Take care of business. Have an uncompromising attitude and be willing to lie, cheat, and steal to achieve success. Just make sure the ends justify the means.

  4. Step 3

    Disregard your health

Act without considering the physical consequences; true grit means no fear about losing an eye -- or your life.

  5. Drink liquor to dull your mind and body against the inevitable physical pain.

  6. Step 4

    Be persistent

Muster the courage to overcome setbacks along the way, including injuries, kidnappings, or a partner's murder. Don't give up, no matter how messy things get, and boldly finish your mission.

  7. Step 5

    Get back out there

Congratulations -- true grit is yours! Take a minute to wash the dust off your face. Then, get back on the trail; once you have true grit, you're honor-bound to keep on fighting.

  8. Though John Wayne starred in over 150 films, his Oscar for 1969's True Grit was his only Academy Award.
