How to Live Stream Using Quicktime

You don’t have to have millions of dollars to broadcast your own live show. Stream anything on the cheap over the internet and be an entertainment pioneer.
You Will Need
- Computer with broadcast software
- Quicktime streaming software
- Video camera
- Advanced computer skills or IT specialist
- Network server
- Website
- Firewire cable (optional)
Step 1: Install software
Install both the broadcasting software and Quicktime streaming software according to the system prompts and directions. Connect your camera to the computer, but don’t turn it on quite yet.
Use a built-in webcam or connect an external camera using a firewire for the best picture and sound.
Step 2: Create an SDP file
Create a Session Description Protocol, or SPD, file using your broadcast software to capture and encode the video from the camera. This process will vary for each program, so follow the included directions.
Step 3: Copy and paste the SDP file
Copy and paste the SDP file inside the Quicktime Streaming Server program media folder. Quicktime will automatically create the folder upon install — search your computer to find it.
Step 4: Launch the Quicktime software
Launch the Quicktime streaming software and turn on your camera. You should see a preview image on the computer screen. If not, click on the Video button and ensure the Enable Video Stream is checked.
Reduce any audio feedback by clicking on the Audio button and checking the box marked “Play through speaker.”
Step 5: Configure servers
Configure the network server and your computer’s IP address to allow the video to be streamed through a website. If you’re unfamiliar with how to do this, you may need to enlist the help of an information technology specialist.
Step 6: Start capturing
Start capturing by pushing the record button on your camera. Be sure it is in video mode. The broadcast software will grab the video through Quicktime and stream it through your website for all to see.
