Hi, I’m Tim Phang. I’m 23 years old. I’ve been skating for about 12 years. I’m from Arlington, Virginia which is right outside of Washington, D.C. I’m now sponsored by Universal Skate Design, and I’m going to be talking to you about rollerblading. Aggressive skating is pretty much all about grinds. Grinds are when you place your skates on top of an object and slide across it. There are essentially 2 categories of grinds. There are groove tricks and sole tricks. Groove tricks are when the obstacle is between your 2 inner wheels. And sole tricks are when you place your skate on top of an object on the sole of the skate. And so an example of a sole trick would be the sole grind. There’s also one-footed sole tricks like the Macio which is just one foot down. A groove trick is when the skates are in the middle of the wheels, in the middle of the frame here. So, an example is the royale with both feet down and a little bit of a lean on your back boot. You can also do combinations of grinds. So, the combinations are generally called switch ups. They involve starting in one position and then changing while you’re sliding into another grinding position. You can do multiple switch ups. You can do spins in between your switch ups. As soon as you learn some standard grinds you can also learn how to spin into and out of your grinds. So you can do Half Capsule grinds or an Alley-oop sole grind. Which would be when you jump onto the ledge and turn around and are grinding backwards. It’s important when you’re learning to grind that you also get used to the balance. It’s going to feel weird at first to be on top of an object and sliding along it. So, and each grind also has different balance points essentially. Depending on the position that your feet are in it’s going to take a little bit of different, it’s going to take a little bit of time for you to get used to balancing on it. It’s also going to take you a little bit of time to get used to bending your knees and the rest of your body into positions for certain grinds. Some of them are going to feel a little awkward at first. But, after a little bit of time you’ll get used to it. And as soon as you get really comfortable with it you can start using variations. And you can spin into and out of your tricks. There is essentially a limitless number of possibilities with switch ups and variations.
