My name's Dana Dunn. I've been working in the piercing business going on 6 years now. I do typically about 3,000 to 4,000 a year. I work at Pins and Needles Tattoo. We have a website pinsandneedlesportland.com. Piercing is my life and I'm going to talk to you about body piercing. Sternum piercing is a surface piercing that's located directly on the breast bone, vertical or horizontal, depending on your preference. It's done with what's called a staple, which is a U-shaped bar, again, depending on the size of your choosing. The tops can be changed. They can be balls. They can be flat gems. The depth is about a quarter of an inch into the skin. Length is, typically, about an inch and a quarter directly down. It is done freehand, which consists of no clamping. It's just a direct needle through the skin. The area's all cleaned and wiped down. Everything like that and there's, typically, no blood. Pierced, usually, with a 14 gauge. Some pierce's do prefer to use PTFE, which is a bioplas plastic rope for healing purposes. For the most part, I prefer using the metal. The healing is better. It's more comfortable, in my opinion and, to me, it just looks a lot better for the piercing.
