What Is Triple Negative Breast Cancer?

Hi, I’m Doctor Marisa Weiss, president and founder of breastcancer.org. I’m also a practicing oncologist, and mom, and also a breast cancer survivor. So I’m happy to share information with you today that could help protect your life against breast cancer. Breast cancer is a complicated disease. There are many different types, and kinds of breast cancer. Whenever a diagnosis is made, we try to understand- what is the nature and the extent of disease in each individual who is confronted by a diagnosis? There is one type of breast cancer that’s called ‘Triple Negative’ and that’s when three sorta different personality features about the breast cancer are not expressed. And we call that ‘Negative’. The three features are: ‘Estrogen Receptor Negative’, ‘Progesterone Receptor Negative’, and ‘Her2 (which is a gene) Negative’. And those are the breast cancers that um, their growth is independent- Is not um, influenced by Estrogen, Progesterone, and the Her2 protein. So we call that ‘Triple Negative’. The Triple Negative breast cancers tend to be more aggressive, and they require more aggressive treatment in order to overcome them. The treatment for a Triple Negative breast cancer um, often involves chemotherapy, in addition to local treatment options like surgery and radiation. If you’ve been diagnosed with a Triple Negative breast cancer, um it’s important to work with a team that’s very experienced in the treatment of breast cancer, where you’re gonna get the best out of each specialty. Many women with Triple Negative breast cancer do just fine, but you wanna take the opportunity to get the best treatment when confronted with such a diagnosis.
