Learn how to do leg lifts in line dancing in this Howcast dance video with expert Robert Royston.
"Hi, my name is Robert Royston. I’m a five time world champion of country dance, working with artists like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley. I really hope you learn how to line dance and experience what’s it’s like to move to America’s music, and that’s country music.
These elements, these sets of elements, have kind of a leg lifting type action. The first thing we’re going to talk about is the scuff, and or the brush, very similar.
The brush is brushing the foot, so you’re brushing the foot. Generally a brush relates to the ball of the foot as it brushes. So I would go brush, step. That would be a brush and then a step. The difference with a scuff to a brush is that you’re going to accent the heel. You’re going to go scuff, step, right? So, if I did a scuff, scuff, I’d be accenting the heel. If I did a brush, I’d probably be doing the ball of the foot. So, brush, step, scuff, step. They look very, very similar, you can interchange the two of them. Both have kind of a lifting and brushing action on the floor. The difference being heel or ball of the foot.
We also have something called the hitch. The hitch is just lifting the leg without brushing of scuffing the floor. So, like you go, hitch, step. Hitch, step. Just taking the leg, making it parallel to the floor, and then taking the step.
So, like you go hitch, step as opposed to brush, step. The other thing we can do with the hitch is if we lift the hitch with enough force and it brings our other foot up and we bring it forward a little bit making a noise. That’s called a chug. So you’re going to chug that forward. Right? So the idea there is that we try not to get a lot of height. You just try to lift that leg up enough to scoot the other foot forward and we have a chug.
So, after we understand what the chug is, the other thing we have is a stomp. A stomp can come off a hitch or a scuff. That’s where we lift our foot up and stomp it down. That would be a stomp.
So anytime making that noise. Right? So we can do a brush, stomp, we could do a scuff, stomp. We could do a hitch, stomp okay. We could do a chug, stomp. These are all lifting techniques or terminology that we use for line dance moves. "
