"Dog Training: How to Deal with Digging Problems Digging is a natural behavior for our canine companions. In fact many dogs were breed specifically to be tenacious diggers. If you're having a problem with your dog digging in the yard, you absolutely need to supervise them when they're in the yard just as we would in the home until they know the house rules let's supervise our puppies and dogs outside so they know the right and wrong thing to do. If you're able to it's nice to provide them with a designated digging area such as a sandbox. It's well defined and you can encourage them to get their digging ya-ya's out there. Right, Nora? If that's not an option for you, try giving them other enriching things to do, like bones, things you might not give indoors because they're a little bit messy, filled with food. This is something they can use to entertain themselves that doesn't involve you. And of course when you have time, a good game of fetch, hide and seek or we call games are the way to go. But remember you dog is better off and happier with you supervising them in the yard so they don't develop habits like digging that you don't want to have to undo. "
