Shea butter is actually the fat of the nut of the African Shea tree. It's really rich in vitamins A and E and fatty acids so it does make an excellent skin moisturizer; it's almost solid at room temperature but melts right at skin temperature which means it absorbs really nicely into the skin as a great texture for extra dry skin. Another lovely thing about Shea butter is that despite how rich it is and how hydrating it is for extra dry skin it's actually noncomedogenic so it doesn't clog pores and it won't cause breakouts if you use it on the face and if you need to you can just use it on cuticles, extra dry spots like elbows, knees, heels; it can be used as a skin conditioning treatment if you just apply it to something like your heels or any calloused areas and apply a hot towel with warm water in it over that almost as a compress so that the steam allows it to penetrate even deeper, hydrating the skin at a even deeper level. So Shea butter is a great product to have just for multiple multiple hydrating uses in the home.
