Trimming your own hair and your family's hair is an easy way to save big bucks every month. In these tutorials, stylist Janet Waddell teaches you how to cut hair using both clippers and scissors; cut hair in layers; clean the hairline with clippers; cut hair into spikes; trim bangs; handle cowlicks; create volume; give a buzz cut; and much more.

How to give someone a buzz cut. Using the clippers, there are four guards that fit onto the head of the clipper; one, two, three, and four; One being the closest and four being the longest. You need to decide what length you want to do the buzz cut first. What I would recommend, actually, is going with the number four, which is slightly longer. Basically start at the hairline at the back and run the clipper over the head this way. Once you've taken all the hair off, then I would actually go back, use a one or a two guard, which is a lot closer than a four, and just nip around the edges with the slightly tighter guard. That way, you're going to get a really nice even cut throughout the head, and then it just tapers in, just to give it a little more of a professional finish. That's how to give someone a buzz cut.
