How to Teach Your Parrot to Fetch on a Table or Floor

Now that your pet has mastered fetching on a perch, we can teach him to fetch on a table. You’re just going to hand your bird the object on one part, and have him come over and bring it to you in another. At first the parrot may need a little guidance. You might want to break your bowl back out if he doesn’t remember what to do. But with a little practice, you should be able to get him to go and pick up the object in one area.

Truman, fetch. Good boy.

You should be able to do this on a table or on the floor. What you’re going to want to do is mix up the objects. I’m going to have a set of keys there to have Truman fetch. By mixing up the objects, it helps the bird learn the command to bring whatever you’re pointing to rather than just the first object that you taught him how to fetch.

Truman, fetch. Good boy.

If your parrot is shy about picking up the new object, you can simply transfer their knowledge of fetching the old object to fetch the new one instead. You have them go with that and you trick them into fetching the alternative object for you.

Fetch. Good boy. Truman, go fetch. Fetch. Go fetch.

That’s how you teach your parrot to fetch or bring an object to you.
