Perfect for attaching the guy line of a tent to a peg or a post, this sliding loop is prized for its ability to adjust up or down, tighter or looser. If only pitching the rest of the tent were so easy.

You Will Need

  • A single length of rope
  • A pole

Step 1: Make "Q" shape

Cross the end of the rope around the pole, and over the top of the remaining rope, making a “Q” shape.

Be sure to give your “Q” a very long tail—you’ll need some extra length to complete the knot.

The tautline hitch is not demonstrated correctly in this video. The final loop should go IN THE SAME DIRECTION as the first two. You can confirm this by checking your own citation; the Boy Scout Handbook has shown in all of it's versions tying the knot as I describe. Online you can also check Knot Knowledge (http://www.iland.net/~jbritton/tautlinehitch.htm), Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taut-line_hitch), and Ropeworks (http://www.ropeworks.biz/reader/tautline.pdf), to name a few. Note that the Wikipedia article identifies your knot as an ";adjustable hitch";. With all this said, I do not know if one or the other hitch is more efficient, but I know I sure wouldn't want to be embarrassed at my next troop meeting by teaching my Scouts the wrong knot!

I stumbled onto this video, and immediately verified that it is wrong, wrong, wrong! Mis-tied and mis-used knots can kill! Your attorneys would appreciate your correcting or removing this video.

Sorry, even Ashley's Book of Knots shows this option.
