How To Setup a Home Server: Download and install WAMP

Step 1: Download and install WAMP

Do a google search for WAMP server and the first result should take you to the WAMP server website where you can download the WAMP application and install it.

When the application is through installing, it should automatically start up and leave an icon in your system tray that looks like a speedometer. Click on this icon and select “Put Online”. Your server should now be online. To test this, open up a web browser and type in “localhost” into the address bar to see if the default page comes up.

Step 3: Share Files On Your Server

To edit what is being shared on your server, click on the system tray icon and select “www directory” to go to the servers directory. Anything that is in this directory will be shared online. So you can add photo’s, videos, web pages, files, etc. to this folder and it will be shared online.

Step 4: Forward Your Server Through Your Router

To forward your server past your router, open up a command prompt and type in IP config and look for your computers IP Address and Default Gateway. Remeber the numbers for both. In a browser, type in the Default Gateway number to log into your router and select “Port Forwarding”. Add your computers IP to the list and set it to forward to port 80.

Step 5: Find Your Routers IP Address

Once you have successfully saved the port forwarding information on your router, go to CMyIP.com:“http://www.cmyip.com” to find your routers IP address. Now copy and paste this IP number into your browsers address bar and it should bring up your servers home page.

Step 6: Get A Domain Name for Your Server

So that you don’t have to remember that long number to access your home server, you can assign a domain name to it. Just go to DynDNS.com:http://www.dyndns.com and sign up for an account. Then create a new hosting account and choose a domain name and set it to your routers IP address. Now just give it to your friends so they can access your server!
