Impress your friends by learning how to pour this classic Irish drink.
Tilt the glass slightly and pour the pale ale until the glass is a bit more than half full.
Pouring the ale quickly creates a bigger head that helps support the layering.
Hold a round soupspoon upside-down over the middle of the glass.
Some people bend the spoon handle into a horizontal “S” shape that can be balanced on the edge of the glass.
Pour the Guinness very slowly over the center of the spoon, letting it run over the sides and into the glass.
Congratulations. You’ve made a black and tan. Bottoms up!
“Black and tan” once had a less cheery connotation, referring to the black-and-tan-clad British troops who fought the rebels during the Irish war of independence.
