Just like any businessperson, a babysitter needs to keep building her clientele. Here’s how.
Head online. Nowadays, sitters can post their profile and contact information on websites specifically geared toward parents looking for babysitters.
Sign up for a babysitting class with your local YMCA, Red Cross, library, or hospital. Not only will you be trained in CPR, which is an asset, but parents often go to these places looking to hire graduates.
Put up flyers on community boards at neighborhood shops, day cares, and schools. List your phone number or email address, qualifications, and experience. Just don’t give your full name—you don’t want to give too much information to people who aren’t parents.
Take out a classified ad in your community paper; you’ll likely earn the fee back in babysitting jobs.
Avril Lavigne got her big break by babysitting her future record producer’s kids.
When you’ve found a gig, go above and beyond the call of duty. In addition to keeping the kids safe and happy, look for ways to wow the parents, like leaving the kitchen cleaner than you found it. You’ll get asked back, and they’ll tell their friends about you.
Volunteer to babysit at your church’s nursery school or at an after-school program. Parents will get to know and feel comfortable with you, and you’ll prove you can be trusted with children.
Spread the word. Surveys show that the number one way parents find babysitters is by asking friends and family for recommendations. So put the word out that you’re looking for babysitting jobs.
