Steps

  1. Step 1

    Download instructions & gift tags

Download baking instructions and gift tags from "hallmarkmagazine.com":http://hallmarkmagazine.com. Each tag has the name of the cake written on the front and the baking instructions on the back.

  2. Step 2

    Create first layer

Create the first layer by combining ¾ cup cake flour, espresso powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and adding the mixture to the jar.

  3. Even out and settle the layers by rapping the jar gently on the counter after you add each one.

  4. Step 3

    Add layer 2

Combine 1 cup cake flour and unsweetened cocoa powder and add that mixture on top of the first layer.

  5. Step 4

    Add layer 3

Combine brown sugar and ¼ cup of sifted cake flour and add the mixture to the jar.

  6. Step 5

    Create layer 4

Mix granulated sugar and buttermilk powder for the fourth layer.

  7. You can substitute nonfat milk powder for the buttermilk powder.

  8. Step 6

    Create layer 5

Create the fifth layer by sprinkling the mini chocolate chips on top of the mix.

  9. Step 7

    Decorate the lid

Decorate the lid by placing it top-side down on a sheet of wrapping paper, cutting out a circle of paper around the lid, and gluing it to the top. Screw the lid back on the jar.

  10. Step 8

    Attach tag to jar

Write a personal note on the inside of the tag. Then, punch a hole in the corner of the tag and attach it to the jar with your ribbon.

  11. Step 9

    Deliver the gift

Deliver the gift. Be sure to drop a hint that you want to be invited back for a piece of cake!
