You know you should carpool and take public transportation—it’s just not always practical. But if you have to drive, there are ways you can save gas, money, and the environment.
Slow down. Traveling at 55 mph gives you up to 21 percent better gas mileage as compared to driving at 65 mph. Plus, since traffic lights are timed for the lower speed, you’ll decrease your odds of having to stop—another gas waster.
Get regular tune-ups, and pay special attention to your air filters. Dirty ones diminish airflow, which wastes gas.
Avoid idling, which takes up more gas than stopping and restarting the engine. Turn your car off when you’re waiting for someone, and go into fast-food places instead of using the drive-through.
Don’t bother warming up your car in the winter; it’s not necessary with today’s vehicles.
Go easy on both gas and brakes. Anytime you do a jackrabbit start or a quick stop it decreases your gas mileage.
Weight also decreases gas mileage, so clean out your car of any unnecessary items.
Instead of transporting things on a roof rack, put them in the trunk or car to reduce drag.
Stick to paved roads; dirt and gravel can reduce gas mileage by as much as 30 percent.
Invest in a hybrid. Not only do they give you immediate savings at the pump, they may even earn you a tax break.
Statistically, gas prices tend to be cheapest on Wednesdays.

Hybrids DO NOT save you money! You will have to keep them at least 5 to 6 years just to break even on the higher price you paid for it. Then when you have to change the batteries, and YES, you will HAVE to CHANGE THE BATTERIES, they will cost you anywhere from $7000.00 to $9000.00 depending on the model. And this is at 2008 dollar values. SO overall, HYBRIDS ARE A SCAM.

Nonsense. Hybrid batteries are guaranteed by law for 8 years /100,000 miles and 10 years/150,000 miles in the "green" states.. The battery pack is generally good for the life of the vehicle.

Well I hate to rain on your parade, but I just got a quote on a battery replacement for a 2003 Honda Insight with 150,000 miles.
Try $6312.70 !!!!!!!
The battery (refurbished) replaced and 2 control modules plus labor.
I do not see where hybrids are cost effective and I own 3 of them. For That kinda of money I can buy 1500 gallons of gasoline at $4 a gallon. I am really miffed because I was told around $1500 to replace the battery when I bought it. Who wants to invest that kind of money when the car is 5 to 10 years old. I was once a hybrid man but they are a scam....
THE ABOVE QUOTE IS FROM A FRIEND THAT BOUGHT INTO THE SCAM
A LOT OF GOOD THE WARRANTY DID HIM............
Go ahead, be a 'Merkin and buy into the HYBRID SCAM. GM will love you long time.

Driving on the highway with the a/c on they say you loose 1mpg. Driving on the highway with your windows open you also lose 1mpg they say because its less aerodynamic. This is merely speculation at this point, It's just something I heard that makes sense.

Sounds like it might be worth it to convert to a small 4 cylinder...I'd look into it.
