How to Make Your Own Dog Treats
Show your four-legged friend you care by cooking up some homemade treats.
Instructions
- Step 1: Fry the bacon Place the bacon strips side-by-side in the frying pan and fry on medium heat until crispy. Drain on two paper towels on top of a plate, and reserve the fat.
- TIP: While frying the bacon, preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
- Step 2: Mix the flour Pour 3 cups of wheat flour into a bowl, add the water, and stir with a spoon. Add the egg, milk, and garlic powder, mixing thoroughly until the batter is thick and sticky.
- Step 3: Add bacon and bacon fat Crumble the bacon strips into small pieces and add them plus 1/4 cup of reserved bacon fat to the mixture. Stir well.
- Step 4: Roll the dough Spread a handful of whole wheat flour on the kitchen table or counter. Roll the dough flat until it's ½-inch thick.
- Step 5: Cut up the dough Grease the cookie sheet with the cooking spray. Slice the dough into small, "begging sized" strips and place them on the cookie sheet.
- Step 6: Bake and cool Bake in the oven for approximately 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool and use as a training treat or a reward for being a good dog.
- FACT: An American living in London created the first dog treat, a blend of wheat, vegetables, and meat, in 1860.
