How to Raise Good Children

Learn about raising good children and make the hardest job in the world more successful and fulfilling for you and your children.

Instructions

  • Step 1: Reinforce good behavior Reinforce good behavior simply, clearly, and positively. Make your children feel important by letting them know you are aware of their efforts to learn appropriate behavior.
  • Step 2: Teach social skills Teach social skills, including tolerance and cooperation. Let your children go outside and discover that the world can be more exciting than a cartoon or video game.
  • TIP: Remember that your kids need to interact in the real world, so don’t feel obliged to buy them electronic distractions.
  • Step 3: Recognize teachable moments Recognize and use teachable moments. Demonstrate patience and coach them to focus, being sensitive to the learning medium that is most effective for them.
  • TIP: Kids will favor learning through language, visuals, or physical interaction.
  • Step 4: Set limits Set consistent limits. Explain the difference between needs and wants. State your expectations, expect compliance, and hold fast to consequences when they challenge you.
  • TIP: Kids test limits in order to learn what they want and how to be independent. Encourage the choosing process while enforcing consequences for their actions.
  • Step 5: Conduct family meetings Conduct formal family meetings once or twice a week for reports and discussions about everyone’s day. Use the meetings to air differences, including kids’ opinions about house rules.
  • Step 6: Express feelings Express your feelings openly, encouraging your children to do the same. Model rational, forgiving, realistic behavior.
  • TIP: Remember that your job is to help them, not to be their friend. You are their role model and the most significant example they have for how to act in life.
  • Step 7: Keep your word Keep your word in all matters and follow through on promises. Don’t hide how hard this can be to do in everyday life.
  • Step 8: Raise them with values Raise them with values and habits that show respect to others. Children want to make the world better, so they will emulate honorable parents and generous behavior.
  • FACT: One study showed that an average of 20 to 25 violent acts were shown in children’s television programs each hour.
