Whether you're heading to a lake or an ocean, this guide will get you prepared for the sun, sand, and waves as you enjoy your vacation.
Step 1: Pack smart Pack gear that can do more than one thing, such as a beach bag that converts to a nifty beach mat for you to lay out on.
TIP: Limit plastic bottles, utensils, and bags to cut down on the amount of trash you'll have to pack up and take with you.
Step 2: Protect your eyes and skin Protect your eyes with sunglasses that are labeled "U-V 400" or "100 percent U-V protection." Look for sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, of at least 15.
Step 3: Bring chairs and an umbrella Bring lightweight folding chairs so you have a place to sit, and don't forget a beach umbrella to get out of the bright sun when things get too hot.
Step 4: Remember foot wear Remember to bring footwear -- either sandals or flip-flops. Beach sand can get really hot, so be prepared and protected.
Step 5: Remember toys Pack water and sand toys, and a football or Frisbee to play with when you get bored of sunbathing or swimming.
TIP: Bring a book or a magazine to squeeze in some light reading during your down time.
Step 6: Pack a cooler Pack a cooler with snacks, sandwiches and lots and lots of water. Basking on the beach can take a lot out of you, so you'll want to feed yourself and stay hydrated.
FACT: Canada has the longest coastline in the world, and Monaco has the shortest.
