Hello my name is Joe Dock Houston and I'm here with my friend Jen in Portland, Oregon to share some tricks, tactics and strategies to help you get the most out of your boxing career.
... Finding a boxing club in your town may be more difficult than you think. Most times they're not advertised and not in the yellow pages. I suggest that when you're looking for a gym, start out with a basic internet search. If that doesn't work, then go by word of mouth. People who have lived in the town 5, 20 years, their whole lives, oftentimes they'll be able to think of a name or place to go. Another thing that's worked for me in the past is asking barbers at old barber's shops. Oftentimes they've given me advice of where to go and who to talk to.
When you walk into a gym and you're trying to decide if it's right for you, take a look around you. Look at the other boxers and the club in general. Is there a diversity of culture? People of different ages, races, genders, educational backgrounds? Do the older, more experienced boxers help out the younger ones? Is the gym a member of USA Boxing, which is the amateur boxing umbrella organization.
