I’m Tim Flynn and I’m the owner of Winters Plumbing and Heating in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Winters Company offers plumbing, heating, cooling. If you need service today; we’re the business to call. My website is wintershomeservices.com. I’ll be talking to you today about plumbing. Plumbing emergencies happen all the time and I remember one, am 4th of July weekend I took a phone call. And the phones now, you can pick up a lot of background noises and I could hear water hitting the floor. And I said to the gentleman on the phone, do you know how to shut off your water mains? And he said, well you know,I really don’t know how to do it.So i walked him through how to shut off his water mains. So if there is one piece of advice I have to give somebody is that when the water is hitting the floor it’s panic mood and you are not thinking. So know how to shut off your water main before it’s an emergency and make sure that everyone knows.Listen to smoke detectors evacuators, know how to shut off the water , it’s equally as important because running water could cost you thousands of dollars in damage.Handling leaky toilet situations always, is the first and foremost thing that people encounter.Especially ones that overflow, the water doesn’t stop, it just keeps on running and running, panic sets in.But, every toilet that I have ever seen, down near the floor, the left hand side of the toilet ,facing it, turn that valve to the right until it stops, right is tight, shuts off the water. Thanksgiving,Christmas day drains that are plugged, usually that’s my father in law, shoving a turkey caucus down the disposal, I’ve seen him do that a few times, not a lot of fun but I’ve seen him do that. That is a situation where you would probably need a professional plumber immediately,so I always keep that phone number on hand.If you block up a drain, the key is not to run any more water down that drain. If you have a main drain that’s plugged inside your house, for example if a toilet’s overflowing you don’t want to run any more water down the drain, because it’s just gonna basically make the situation even worse.
