Hello, my name is Carolyn Dean, drcarolyndean.com. I'm a medical doctor and a naturopathic doctor and I live in beautiful Maui. I've finished my 22nd health book, I have a free newsletter and I also have an online wellness program that you can join. And today in this series I'll be talking about dieting. This is the Eat Clean Diet. It's by a media personality- Tosca Reno- great name. It's basically about eating unrefined foods. Going to your farmer's market and getting the base ingredients of a good lean protein moderate carbohydrate, moderate fat diet. She talks a lot about avoiding chemicals and preservatives- and you'll do that if you cook from scratch and it does take time but it's definitely worth it. She doesn't focus on being a vegetarian or being a high-protein eater. It's very balanced right down the middle. I don't believe in this theory of eating every couple of hours to keep your metabolism going. I think instead you should look at liver snaking. I've written about this and what it is, is if you eat a meal, half of that meal is going to go into sugar storage called glycogen and when the glycogen area is filled up. and that's only 700 grams, it goes into fat storage. What happens in order to break down the glycogen and the fat is after two or three hours, something called glucagon comes out from the pancreas and breaks down the glycogen and gives you the snack that instead you keep on eating. After the glycogen is gone, then you have fat burning. I'd rather people spread out their meals so their only eating three good meals a day and between if you're hungry you drink water and you maybe do three or four minutes of exercise to get your liver storage working. It will help your liver from becoming clogged up and not working properly. I like what Tosca Reno says but I don't agree with the six meals a day.
