Hello, my name is Carolyn Dean, drcarolyndean.com. I'm a medical doctor and a naturopathic doctor and I live in beautiful Maui. I've finished my 22nd health book, I have a free newsletter and I also have an online wellness program that you can join. And today in this series I'll be talking about dieting. The south beach diet super charged with Dr.Augustine's second book. In 2003 he had this incredible FAD book that's south beach diet, it sounded great, the celebrities got on board, it really spread far and wide but it's basically an Atkins diet- high protein, low carbohydrates about 10-25% carbohydrate and low fat. So what happens with this type of diet when you don't have the carbohydrates to create the blood sugar to drive your brain and drive your cell activity then the body has to go and breakdown fat and sometimes break down protein. When it is breaking down fat it is producing ketones and some people feel that too much ketone can be a problem , other people don't feel that way. It can be because some people are able to metabolize proteins and create ketones and it doesn't bother and some people can't .An O blood group can digest animal protein better than an A blood group or an AB or B blood group. So I always look at the balance of a diet if it's so strictly protein some people can't digest that. The supercharged part actually is he added activity ,he added exercise to this program .And the basics of this diet ,we start with such a restricted animal protein and basically salad vegetables that people will lose weight but it's interesting Dr Augustine says that with the second stage adding whole grains, and some dairy and some fats , that a lot of people actually like the first stage. So I think that's where people are self selecting as O blood types to that aspect of the diet. As I said the supercharged adds the exercise because a lot of people on the south beach diet found that they also needed activity .So the basically South Beach supercharged is a high protein diet with exercise included that probably is more suited for an O type diet but it's certainly not for everybody.
