Hi, my name is Lisa Moskovitz and I'm a registered dietitian and certified in the state of New York, with a private practice on the upper east side. I specialize in weight management, exercise and sports nutrition. And I'll be talking to you about diets. Low carbohydrate diets - are they safe and effective? What is a carbohydrate? A carbohydrate is a starch, a fruit or fruit juice, and milk or yogurt. Those are what provide us with the energy we need for voluntary and involuntary actions. So while we do need carbohydrates in small amounts, we can certainly easily overdo it. Eating too many carbohydrates will eventually cause us to gain weight. As anything we eat in excess to what we can store or use as energy, gets converted right into fat stores. The best approach is to eat carbohydrates in moderation, and of course, choose the best types. This includes whole grains, whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta and fruits. Eating all these in moderation will ensure you stay full, getting plenty of nutrients and avoiding weight gain.
