Hi, I'm Debbie Catz. I'm a certified clinical hypnotherapist here in the San Francisco Bay area. I have a masters degree in social work. To learn more about this you can visit my website at www.norcalhypno.com. And now I'm going to help you understand the simplicity of hypnosis. Hypnosis is...the definition is a deep state of relaxation. So, hypnosis is relaxation. So, I'm going to tell you first how to induce hypnosis, just to get the person ready to go into hypnosis. There's a number of different ways to induce hypnosis. There's scripts.. There's a lot of stuff on the internet that you can actually get. Different scripts and different techniques and some of them are even free. But, the fast way to, um, induce hypnosis is to have a person stare at a spot on the ceiling or on somebody's hand which is placed a little bit above the eyes. And, as they stare at the spot their eyes become tired. You can have them take a nice deep breath in while they're staring at a spot and if they can hold their breath comfortably for a couple of seconds that would be good too. And then just have them stare at the spot until you see their eyes beginning to flutter and maybe water a little bit. That means the eyes are getting tired and that's a sign that they're ready to go into hypnosis. So, then once you direct them to go ahead and allow their eyes to close down, the next thing you wanna' do is to just have them concentrate on their breathing; breathing in and out and following their breath for a few seconds. And then you can take them to, um, through a progressive relaxation and what that really is is its a um, relaxing from the top of your head down to the bottom of your feet. Some people relax from the feet to the head, about fifteen percent of the population, but most people will start with the head and you just direct them. You can use anything. I use a nice warm light to come in through the head and moving about the head and the face, down the shoulders, the back muscles, and you go through the entire body and you're just progressively relaxing the body and then once they're in that nice relaxed state then you can anchor it in. So, you kind of give them something to do that will keep them in that state when they...that will put them in that state when they want to achieve that again. So, something you can do is have them touch their thumb and their forefinger together on one had and you direct them. You say, "Just by touching your thumb and forefinger together on one hand you will be able to achieve this wonderful relaxed state any time you wish.". You have just anchored in that relaxed state that will be accessible to them any time that they need it.
