Hi, I'm Debbie Catz. I'm a certified clinical hypnotherapist here in the San Francisco Bay area. I have a masters degree in social work. To learn more about this you can visit my website at www.norcalhypno.com. And now I'm going to help you understand the simplicity of hypnosis. Most of the pain during childbirth is due to fear. There is a cycle called fear, tension, and pain and that was coined by a doctor named Grantly Dick-Reed in early 19th century and so when we have fear, which so many women have when they are getting ready to birth, we have tension, and then we have pain, so the way hypnosis works with that in the program that I teach called hypnobirthing, we deal with the subconscious mind and we do what we call fear releases and so we explore the subconscious mind because everything begins in the mind and hypnosis deals with the subconscious mind, the 90% of the brain and so we deal with that fear. So when a mom doesn't have the fear, she doesn't have the tension and thus she enjoys a much more comfortable labor and birthing. Also when you work with the mind and you deal with hypnosis, which is a deep state of relaxation, when a woman relaxes during childbirth she births much easier. The average child birth is 2 to 6 hours. Yeah, believe it or not, that's what I said 2 to 6 hours from beginning to end and so when we relax the mind and we allow the body to work as it is meant to and we don't use interventions, childbirth can actually be a very enjoyable experience and moms are happier and more relaxed and not drugged up and then of course babies are happier too and may come out not drugged up, ready to breast feed and just all around a better experience. When we are in the sympathetic stage, which is also known as the fight or flight response, a lot of women when they are getting ready to birth especially when they get to the hospital or they are going to do a hospital birth, they go into that fight or flight response and through hypnosis we can help them to not go there because what happens when we are in the fight or flight response the oxygenated blood is going to our extremities or hands and feet and then the baby is not getting the oxygenated blood it needs so through hypnosis we help the mom to stay in the parasympathetic state, which is the calm relaxed state so that she can birth more easily, her muscles can work together, her body can work as it was meant to work and what happens is when it comes time to give birth the mom is relaxed and it happens very easily and very quickly.
