Hi, I'm Lisa Dawn Angerame. I'm one of the founding partners of Nava NYC, a collective of nine yoga and meditation teachers in New York City. Our website is www.navanyc.com.
Today I will be talking to you about meditation. Yoga and meditation are a couple. They've been together since ancient times. The yogis figured out that, if they practiced yoga, they would be able to sit for longer and longer periods of time in meditation; to retain bliss, happiness, this feeling of oneness. So, the Asana practice, the yoga practice, is designed to open up the physical body. So, we do a lot of different poses to get our muscles less tense, to find ourselves more limber, so that sitting for long periods of time in meditation is easy.
We want the meditation practice to feel comfortable. So, the yoga practice enables a comfortable body. Vinyasa style yoga is like a moving meditation. You employ the same techniques of focusing and breathing, while we're moving through the yoga practice. So, every move corresponds to a breath, and every breath corresponds to a move.
So, you don't ever complete a movement, without completing a breath. And you stay so focused on your breath, that it becomes a moving meditation; so focused, so clean, so clear. Moving in sync with your breath, clears your mind. Just like when you sit in meditation.
