You can use them offensively or defensively. You can set the person up. You're trying to be sensitive as far as how you feel, how you touch, to know what they're doing and what they're not doing. The basic technique using a left low kick against Nicholas's left jab would be he throws his jab, I parry it, and I step to my right. I'm trying to take both of his legs with a low kick. Now, I'm avoiding the jab and I'm being evasive because he maybe though I was going to come straight, but because I changed the angle on it, I can take is leg. And I'm going for both of his legs, not just one.Now the second one I was trying to do where I set the opponent up. He grabs me and I clinch because I'm trying to set him up, so I throw my hand through here to grab. Now as he starts to clench me a little tighter, I'm going to pop this arm over the top. First I want to touch it to see if he's got any tension there. If there is tension there, I forget it, but if there's not tension, I can just pop him over, and I evade him trying to get the proper clinch, and then I have the clench and I start working on the knees.
