Hi, I'm Doctor Marisa Weiss, president and founder of breastcancer.org. I'm also a practicing oncologist, and mom, and also a breast cancer survivor. So I'm happy to share information with you today that could help protect your life against breast cancer. A woman who is in her 50s is a very busy over extended person, she's got a lot going on at home, at work, in the community and they are a lot of life changes that you can really feel the bumps of it could be an emptiness, it could be you still have teenagers around, you may have been dealing with a divorce, you may have challenges with promotion at work, you are trying to secure your future, you trying to think about retirement one day there's a lot going on. But just know that on an everyday basis you can make healthy choices that can protect your breast health. One of the biggest challenges for a woman who is in her 50s, she may be going through menopause, peri menopausal they are very many changes in her early 50s is the weight gain, shaking off those extra pounds that have just climbed on over the years. It's hard for any woman to manage her weight but in terms of protecting your breast health as well as addressing all of women's' health getting to and sticking to a healthy way is very important. Enjoy the glass of wine but try to limit it to five or few drinks over week less is more. Finding the time to exercise particularly if you've got various aches and pains maybe you're an athlete in the past or you retaby isn't working as well or maybe you've got back discomfort, try to work with a personal trainer to figure out a exercise plan that fits your life span and mix it up, don't do one thing too much. I enjoy zumba, I'm in my 50s, I enjoy the music and the dance that goes with it, I also like walking with friends. There are other things that you can do to mix it up to stay physically active. You may have other medical issues like diabetes and things like that, it's important to address the physical strain in your life as well as emotional stress. A lot of investment you make, if its meditation, if its yoga, if it's getting your blood sugar under control will make you feel so much better overall anyway and also help protect your breast health. Besides taking all these steps to reduce your risk of ever getting breast cancer, you still want to take full advantage of early detection. If you are in your 50s it's really important to get that mammogram each year together with your doctor's breast examination and your own breast self examination. Those three tools will help you get the greatest benefit from early detection.
