My name is Mike Jones, and I'm a barista at Third Rail Coffee right by Washington Square Park in New York City. I'm going to teach you some basic coffee-making skills.

So what type of cup should you be drinking your coffee out of? Now the main difference between the different cups is just going to be, simply size, especially as relating to espresso drinks. Most milk-based beverages are based on a ratio, so for instance, a macchiato is just an espresso with a little bit of foam. So that's typically going to be in a 2 to 3 oz. cup. Cappuccino is going to be in a 5 to 6 oz. cup. A latte: between 8 and 12, typically and same with a mocha or a hot chocolate. An espresso is served in just a little cup, called a demitasse usually. These are all at most cafés, ceramic, but you can drink it out of a glass, you can drink it out of paper. Typically, it's just size, so if you want a nice coffee, just a pint glass is nice. So really the most important thing in a cup, is that it will retain the heat and it's the right volume for the drink that you're currently having.
