One of the questions we get asked the most about is what line of knives I should buy. There's a lot of good knives out there, but there's really in reality there's only a few good manufacturers.
If a line of knives is named after some pots and pans or something else odds are it's probably made in China, and is made for profit. It's not made to be a good quality product.
You want to take and really look for a company that specializes in knives, and that's all they do. You also want to look at the label. In the small print it's going to say where it's made, Germany, Japan, the United States, Italy, France, are a lot of the good countries in which to be made.
There's also a lot of exclusives out on the market now where certain companies will have an exclusive on a line. The one problem with buying an exclusive is that the exclusive may only be available for a couple of years. What happens if you lose one of the knives, one of your friends come really likes it, you give it to him, you go back to the store to buy a replacement, and they don't have that line anymore. Now you spent thousands of dollars, or hundreds of dollars on a line of kitchen knives, and you're going to have a knife that doesn't match.
Make sure you get something that's going to be around, because you never know. That pizza comes, and there's that slice that isn't cut through, you're going to grab your paring knife or another knife in which to cut it, finish off the pizza, throw the box out, and the knife is sitting in the box, and you're running to the store to buy another knife.
