During the stress response, stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol are released into the body. Now the stress hormones if not flushed out of the body through massage, exercise or movement can potentially cause long term pain, discomfort even illness and disease. Adrenalin, for example, causes the muscle to tense and tighten which can potentially cause chronic headaches. It also causes the blood vessels to constrict, which can potentially lead to high blood pressure. Adrenalin also releases fat or uses energy, and if all of this fat isn't used, it can potentially be deposited along artery walls and cause heart disease. Some of the effects of cortisol are increased blood pressure, increased blood sugar, which can potentially lead to blood sugar imbalances in the body. It suppresses the immune system. It reduces calcium absorption which can lead to decrease bone formation. It also damages cells and hippocampus in the brain, which can lead to long term memory loss and even learning impairment. And finally it can overwhelm the good feeling hormones in the brain like serotonin, so it could potentially lead to depression. So reducing your exposure to stress can keep you mentally and physically healthy and happy.
