Hi, I'm Joe D'Andrea, a Pokemon professor at Comic Cafe in Warren New Jersey, and we're here to show you how to play the Pokemon trading card game.
Trading card games are not like regular card games. They combine two things: collectible cards and strategic game play. In the case of Pokemon, there are instructions on each card that tell you to do different things. So, as you collect more cards, they can alter the way the game is played. If you are just getting started, you can purchase a theme deck. This is a pre-made deck of 60 cards and includes full instructions, counters, coins, all the things you need to play a game. If they are more experienced, they'll put together their own deck of 60 cards. The Pokemon Company releases a new expansion set — it's about a 100 cards — every 3 months. And so, as a result, the game keeps evolving and growing. The more experienced players will collect booster packs or sets, full sets of cards, and compose their own 60-card deck. So, no two games are ever alike.
Pokemon holds tournaments all over the world. They start with battle roads, and then there is also city tournaments, state tournaments, regional, mini national, and then all the way up to the world championships. And there is even an online version of the game. This is brand new, where you can assemble a virtual set of cards and battle traders all over the world.
