Basic Equipment for Lacrosse

Learn about the basic equipment needed to play lacrosse from the pros at Game Breaker Lacrosse Camps in this Howcast video.

Hi, I'm Taylor Nissi, Director of Operations for Game Breaker Lacrosse. I'm here today with Nick Schmidt who's one of our great regional directors. Please visit our website The various positions in lacrosse require different sticks. For goalies, this stick is characterized by a larger head and the pocket can have as much depth as the player prefers. This is the same for both men's and women's. For field players in men's lacrosse, you'll have a stick with a deeper pocket. Women's lacrosse, as you can see, does not have much pocket. And that's the main difference between field players. Additionally for women's lacrosse, sticks are all generally one length, whereas men's lacrosse, defenders typically have a longer stick that is about 72 inches long. Men's lacrosse players are required to wear protective gloves to protect their hands from stick checks and the ball flying around. Women's players aren't required to do that. There's two different types of gloves used during a men's lacrosse game. You have the goalie glove. You know it's the goalie glove because it has the additional padding on the thumb to protect from shots in the upper 90's. Traditional field player's glove will be similar to the goalie glove as far as protection, but it will lack the big pad on the thumb. Some of the more recent features on lacrosse gloves are floating cuff. This protects your hand from a stick check, but still allows you the full range of motion that helps you to cradle, shoot and pass. Protective headwear is an important part of lacrosse protective gear. For men's field players, everyone should have a basic helmet like this. You know a helmet fits properly when you put it on your head and you can shake it around without the cage jarring too much. For all women's field players, they'll just have protective eyewear. They don't have the full helmet like men's gear does. For goalies in the sport of lacrosse, it's important that they have a full helmet, along with a neck protector to protect them from any shots that might slide in under the main helmet protector. And those are the various types of protective headwear that we have in the sport of lacrosse.
