How to Write a Functional Resume

Learn how to write a functional resume from career expert Nicole Williams in this Howcast video.

You're working in a particular industry, now you're looking to get out of that industry, and you have some work experience, but it's lower down in your resume. It's called a functional resume because you want to bring to the forefront this past work experience that is relevant to the job you're applying to. So it's not about the last job you had. It's about the job that you had in the past that is directly attached to the experience and skill set that this new employer is looking for. So you want to bring the function of that past job to the top of the resume. So it's not necessarily the last job you had, but it is the last time that you worked within the industry that is specific to the job that you're applying for now. That's the purpose of the functional resume. When you want to highlight the fact that you have had past work experience in this industry, but it wasn't your last job. That's when you use the functional resume.
