What's up? This is Matt Steffanina and today I'm gonna teach you guys how to tick. Ticking is a style that's easy to learn, but very difficult to master. So, today I'm gonna give you guys some drills that you can do at home, to improve your ticking.
The first thing you're gonna do is, start with your arms relaxed by your side. We're gonna bring our arms up, one at a time, going right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left. This should feel really robotic. You want it to hit and stick, hit and stick, hit and stick. In order to do this, you have to really tighten up the muscles in your upper arm.
So, when I go to begin this movement, I'm jerking my arm forward, and I'm tightening my bicep, my tricep, and my forearm, to stop on a dime. You can also add a pop at the end of each movement, to make it a little bit more accented. Once you get this down, you can practice this in any direction. In any normal movement you would do while dancing, you can add a strobe or a tick to it, to create that jumping effect.
Remember, practice makes perfect. So, take a lot of time to put music on and just go over these drills. They feel a little bit tedious, but in the end, your ticks are gonna look crazy, and you can mix them into your waves, and other pops to add a great animation effect.
