I get asked a lot about what are the best treatments for oily skin. Everybody thinks they have really oily skin, but no one really understands what it is. Oily skin only refers to the amount of oil secreted into your pores from the skin. The way to find out if you have oily skin is to look at the pore size on your face. If you can see pores, and I don’t mean like little dots, I mean circles on your nose and circles on your face, then yes, you have oily skin. If you don’t see that, then you don’t have oily skin. So please don’t treat your skin with oily-skin products.
The best way to treat oily skin in general is to keep the skin clean and to use really calming and soothing products. I think a big misconception that people do is they use a lot of acids, a lot of drying products, and a lot of products that strip the skin of its natural oils, but all you’re signalling the skin to do is to produce more oil. So you don’t want to strip the skin of all of its oil, because you’re never going to handle your oily skin. The best thing to do is to calm the skin and use products that really soothe it and disinflame it. Avocado is really great. Acidophilus, which is found in yogurt, is really fantastic. Oatmeal is really great. Those kinds of ingredients are wonderful for oily skin because they absorb some of the oil and a lot of the dirt without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
I would exfoliate the skin a lot if you have oily skin, but perhaps don’t use a scrub. Use an enzyme mask for oily skin. Because if you do have blemishes on the face, and you use a scrub, you’re just spreading the bacteria everywhere. So you don’t want to do that. And then I would use a mask that has some clay in it, a green clay or a brown clay. It doesn’t matter. Clay absorbs oil in excess in your skin and also pulls dirt out of your pores. It will really clean your skin, and it will make your skin look very pristine and beautiful without stripping the skin of its natural oils. So just as sort of a general tip, don’t strip your skin of its natural oils, and use soothing products for oily skin. And you should see a really big improvement.
