What Makes Beans a Superfood?

Learn what makes beans a superfood from nutrition coach Lisa Neilsen in this Howcast video.

The next superfood is beans. The reason why beans are superfoods is that they are high in fibre, they are low in fat and they are a great source of protein. Many of my clients are concerned about adding beans into the diet, because of the fact that they may get gas. My suggestion for adding beans into your diet is to add them in small portions slowly over time so that your gastrointestinal system gets used to digesting the beans. One of the things that's fun about beans is that there are lots of different beans to try. You can try garbanzo beans, pinto beans, lima beans. They all have different tastes, they all have great nutrition profiles. So when you are out looking at beans, be experimental. Try something new. One of the things you wanna be careful about, with beans is that if you are buying canned beans, there can be a high amount of sodium. You need to compare those in shops. When you are at the store and you are looking at the shelf, you wanna pick up each can of beans, each of the different brands and you wanna choose the one with the lowest sodium levels. So again beans are a great superfood to add into your diet. And the way to do it effectively, is to do it in small portions and to try a variety over time.
