What Is Celiac Disease?

Learn about Celiac Disease from gastroenterologist Lisa Ganjhu, M.D. in this Howcast video about stomach problems and digestive disorders.

Transcript

Celiac disease is basically intolerance to the protein of wheat which is the gluten portion of wheat. It's an unfortunate problem that people can't digest the wheat. The other big thing with celiac disease is if they're exposed to this toxin or the gluten or this wheat protein they can develop inflammation and eventually they can also develop lymphomas or small bowel tumors because of that exposure to the wheat.

So it's important for these people to not have any wheat in their diet which can be kind of difficult because wheat is in everything. They need to be really cognizant of where their food is coming from and that it's not contaminated with wheat products because certain other flowers may be processed in the same factory so there can be some contamination. The cornerstone of people with celiac disease is really avoiding wheat products and any association with that.
