If you doctor says that you have GERD, or gastro esophageal reflux, there's a couple of things that you can do to help manage your symptoms.
First and foremost, is making lifestyle changes. That's changing your diet. So, going to a low-fat meal, low spice, low acidic and high fiber foods help to decrease acid washing up into your esophagus.
Then you can move onto medications. Again, milder reflux symptoms can be managed with antacids such as Maalox or Mylanta. If your symptoms are a little bit stronger, you can go to the H2 blockers, which would be the Pepcid’s or the Xantac products. If your reflux is really bad and you're getting it a lot, then you can move onto the proton pump inhibitors such as the Prevacid or the Prilosec products.
If your reflux is going on for a very long time, it's important to go see your doctor and go see a gastroenterologist to talk about your symptoms because long term acid exposure to the esophagus can lead to some really major problems of the bottom of the esophagus. You really need to be on treatment to help reduce the acid so that you help to prevent any potential problems.
