So, you'll notice in traditional Japanese martial arts, there's really no use of any shield. Um, as there is in, in many of the western, uh, traditional martial arts. And 1 reason could be that the use of the sword became so highly refined that a shield really was never necessary. And, um, the focus was always upon the blade, as both something that guarded as well as could attack or take life. But that knowledge of it being something that, that could guard and shield has always been there in, uh, in the consciousness of Japanese martial arts. So that may be 1 reason why there is no actual shield in, uh, traditional Japanese martial arts schools.
