I'm Paul Bolles-Beaven. I'm the Chief People Officer at Union Square Hospitality Group in New York City. I'm responsible for the hiring, training and development, and promotion of staff for our restaurants. Our company owns and operates 11 New York restaurants such as Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, The Modern, The Cafes at MoMA, Blue Smoke and Blue Smoke Battery Park City, Untitled, Maialino, and North End Grill. We also operate a catering and events company called Union Square Events, a jazz club called Jazz Standard, a learning company called Hospitality Quotient, and we own and operate Shake Shack.
I got started in this business in this company. I started as a waiter with no experience at Union Square Cafe in 1985 and worked all of the front of house positions at that restaurant for 18 years ending as the general manager. As the Chief People Officer one of the responsibilities that I care deeply about is being a great place to work. Because I believe, and our company believes, that when the staff is enjoying working hard our guests will enjoy our restaurants.
I love the restaurant industry. It's incredibly challenging and a lot of fun, and it's a business that uses all sorts of people and different talents and capabilities. I enjoy my job as Chief People Officer because I get to spend my time thinking about how to make this a great company to work for and a company that will keep and grow great talent for the future of our company.
