So we used to talk about the fact that marijuana was a gateway drug. The point that I really need to make here is that marijuana is a drug and it's a drug that people can and do get addicted to. In my role as a therapist at the Caron Treatment Center, in New York City, I treat a number of people who are addicted to marijuana. What does that mean?
What that means is that they have profound negative consequences in their life, as a result of the fact that they smoke marijuana. It means that they can't stop smoking marijuana. It means that they've attempted to stop and they can't. They go back to smoking marijuana. It means that they use marijuana to manage uncomfortable feelings in their life and the thought of not using marijuana fills them with enormous amount of stress, so in my experience marijuana is very addictive and people do get addicted to it.
